MLB Power Rankings

(from WhatIfSports Power Rankings)

The only team with more than 5 runs scored per game and under 4 given up?  Yep, that's the Dodgers!  There's no question why they have the best record in baseball.

The most interesting stat from the Power Rankings?  The Padres, who play in the notoriously pitcher friendly Petco Park, have the most runs scored against them per game at 6 runs/game.

Flying JetBlue

On the flight home yesterday, I watched the 2008 Home Run Derby, when Josh Hamilton hit a record 28 home runs in the first round.

The Home Run Derby has lost its luster since many of Baseball's top sluggers are suspected of having used PEDs, but it was cool to see someone who's overcome a mountain of personal struggles have his moment to shine.

On a related note, caught a few minutes of the '99 Home Run Derby this weekend -- Sosa, McGwire, Griffey , and others like Jeremy Burnitz & John Jaha. All I could think was,"I wonder how many of these guys were on PEDs?"

You're Probably Playing Basketball on an Indian Burial Ground

Constructions workers found a skeleton during the construction at a school gym in Danville, which is about 10 minutes from where I live in San Ramon.

Trying to Predict Baseball Injuries

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/08/sports/baseball/08injuries.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss

Much is made of statistics in baseball, especially with the book Moneyball, about the Oakland Athletics' method of choosing baseball players.

Now teams are starting to use statistics to predict player injuries and the risk associate with signing specific players.  I wonder if they can add the risk of a steroid suspension?

Here's an excerpt from the article.

“This project couldn’t have been done 5 to 10 years ago,” Sugano said. “There weren’t enough numbers, and there wasn’t access to lots of the numbers. The numbers weren’t being collected, and those that were weren’t the cleanest. And 20 years ago, there wasn’t the computational power. It didn’t exist."
